We love Tuscany! What about you?
Loving Tuscany, we could write for several days telling about all the amazing sights of this part of Italy.
There are the must-see cities we mentioned above but you should also give yourself time enough to visit less known locations.
We recommend you the following during a holiday in a rented villa in Tuscany:
Go to the beach in Tuscany
The coast in Tuscany varies a lot from long sandy beaches with shallow waters to beautiful steep cliffs. Private serviced payment beaches and free of charge areas, beaches. Some locations are very child-friendly and some are literally dangerous to swim at.
A day at the beach in this area is like a post card experience with the mountains in the background.
If possible, then avoid going to the beach on Sundays. Often there are traffic jams and it is very difficult to find a parking space for your car.
There is a very special beach culture in Tuscany. Many Italians rent the same umbrella at the same spot year after year. It is easy and you have you own changing room where you can keep your beach things. You know the owner of the beach, the children are sure to meet their playmates and yourself your friends.
Therefore you might experience that the beach attendant will tell you “no free space” even though many of the deckchairs aren’t in use this particular day – they are just reserved for their Italian “owners” in case they should decide to go to the beach later in the afternoon.
Go to the Alpi Apuane mountains in Tuscany
Reserve an entire day for this beautiful and very interesting area.
Visit Carrara which is known for its white marble that Michaelangelo used for his famous sculptures. If you are interested in the history of the marble quarries then visit the museum at Via XX Setembre, near the stadium. We also recommend you to drive up to one of the actual quarries, especially the one called “Fantiscritti” is worth a visit (ca. 6 km from Carrara). They have an interesting open-air museum where you can see the techniques that are used to beak the marble.
Discover the Piaggio Museum
For the Vespa and motorbike interested, this little museum will surely be of great interest. It is located in the city Pontedera, where the Vespa factory, with worldwide and still growing success, produces the trendy scooter. A visit here will take trough the history of the Vespa. The first model was produced back in 1946 and quickly it became very popular as a cheap means of transport in post-war Italy.
During the summer months, the Italian streets are full of the smart Vespa’s.
Visit the harbour city Livorno
Think twice if you believe that Venice is the only city with canals in Italy – visit Livorno! It is a fairly unknown harbour city in the northern part of Tuscany. Back in the days when the city was build up there were far more canals than today. Due to the city being plagued by malaria mosquitoes many of them were filed with soil.
Visit one of the The Thermal Baths in Tuscany
There are numerous thermal baths in Tuscany worth visiting. Some have very elegant spas and beauty salons and others are free to use in the nature.
- Casciana Terme – close to Siena.
- Saturnia Terme – Our favorite! Out in the free you sit under waterfalls of hot spring water.
- Bagno Vignoni – This is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany.
Visit the Grotta del Vento
This is a beautiful stalactite cave in the Garfagnana mountains. Do also enjoy the wonderful drive to the cave on winding and narrow roads.
Every hour are guided tours of different durations. NB! Children must be able to walk at least one hour – child carrier backpacks are not allowed.
Hope to see you in Tuscany!
